Kids' Nicknames

I sometimes find at the preschool that some kids for some reasons have different nicknames at school and their homes. It always interesting to chat with them about the difference of nicknames they had. Sometimes from their parents I knew that their kids’ names just pop up from what the kids called/spelled their own names in baby tongue. Like this, for example: Caca comes from Sasha, since the girl can’t spell her name in a ‘right’ way so Caca become her nickname until she grown up. Just like that…

My daughter also has different name calling. Since her full name is Natalie Amadea (Her name has a meaning : God’s beloved ones. Amadea derived from the word Amadeus. I found it on one of babies name book). We usually call her Dea at home and between closed families. But between her friends and teachers at school her calling name is Natalie. We choose Dea to be her nickname at home because it easier for us to call her – in short or long tones – than Natalie :)
But I like both of them. There was a funny story had ever once happened when I was the one received her friend’s calling and I said “Dea is still in the bathroom” then her friend was confused, “Oh sorry, I think I dialed the wrong number.” Haha….

But my other 2 boys have the same nickname at home and school, Adit (from Nathaniel Aditya - has the same meaning with my daughter’s name, but this is from Sanskrit term) and Ian ( from Ignatius Adrian – with the third kid we just love the sound of his name calling and do not really care of the meaning, as far as we know it’s also good because Ignatius was used to be one of Saint's name :)

What about your kid’s nickname? Do you have something ‘funny and interesting’ story behind it?

Wishing you a very happy week so far... My children have always had nicknames that they earned along the way in our family... My oldest Sons name is Peacock... I can't think of a more fitting name for someone so flashy and flamboyant. My next oldest sons nickname is Armadillo... He picked the name himself and it fits him... He hids behind his shell... His next younger brother is called bulldog... because he won't ever let anything go once he has it in his grip... My school girl has the name Softie Red Squirrel... she read a book about a red squirrel when she was vey young and she was alwsy softie squirrel since.

I love the special names we have for each other... and sometimes there are variations... We just love being a family... It is so special :)

Oh Shelly..about those funny and 'silly' names, we also have it in the family. My daughter is 'Embot' (Chubby), but we seldom used to call her now since she's now slim. The boys are 'Kuncung' (Tufty because Adit's hair is just like that) and 'Jamur' (Onion)because Ian's head and hair shape is like onion :)

my son nickname is "Ant" short from Anthony (at home) but he has another from the restaurant where he works after school...they call him "chef blanko" because he is the only white cook in the restaurant! ;-))

When my daughter was little she couldn't say her name "Aurora Marie" it came out more like "I.E." so for the longest time we called her I.E.

My son's name is Tristan. We just call him Bubbies mostly at home. At his daycare, I've heard his provider call him Tris (not sure if I like it because it reminds me of Trish - like a girls name). We are about to have a little girl and we are going to name her Melayna Kait. My husband wants to call her Kait. I want to call her Laynie. But who knows what her friends and teachers will call her.
